Appreciate The Wins Along The Way
It’s important to appreciate the small leaps and wins along the way.
Life is always moving forward. You’re always running out of time. So a lot of people don’t sit back and look at all the cool shit they’ve accomplished so far.
I was like this when I was fighting. I’d win a fight then it’d be onto the next one. Didn’t really celebrate too much.
But now there’s an interesting perspective I think fighters should take after their wins. I try to do this with Suga too.
Pretend like you lost.
When you lose, it’s easier to focus on skills and small details you need to work on. When you win, it’s harder to think about that stuff. Especially if you go out there and starch your opponent.
Everyone is different when it comes to appreciating wins. I’ve seen guys who celebrate too much. Spend all their time in-between fight camps partying and eating like shit until their next fight is booked.
If you operate this way, when do you have time to get better?
Out of fight camp is when you do most of your skill improvement. Whether it’s wrestling, jiu-jitsu, or striking.
Fight camp is for getting your timing and reactions right. That’s when you get in shape and get your sparring in.
I’ve also seen guys who don’t celebrate at all. They just went through a grueling training camp and fought hard for a W. Monday morning, they’re back in the gym.
From a martial artist perspective, it sounds badass. But I don’t think this is healthy mentally.
It’s good to shut your mind off. Enjoy your family, friends, and loved ones. Go on a mini-vacation.
It’s a lot better than being burned out and bitter. That takes away the motivation and fun from training.
Whatever the goal is, I think you need to take some time to appreciate the wins and the progress you’ve made. Take a week.
I think this is a great thing to practice because it’s easy to feel unaccomplished when you haven’t reached your goals.
When in reality, you’ve gotten better. You just haven’t noticed yet.
Improving your skills is fun, not just in martial arts. So make sure you enjoy practice, enjoy your place of work, and enjoy the camaraderie with the people around you.
Whatever you do or wherever you go to practice, just make sure you’re having fun.
For fighters, it’s especially important because most of your life is in the practice room. Being in the cage and in front of crowds is the shortest period of your career.
We have a world title fight in 9 days.
I’ve been so focused that sometimes I’ve even forgotten how far we’ve come. I have people remind me saying, “Can you believe how far you guys have come? You’re fighting for a world title!”
It really just makes me sit back and realize all the things we’ve accomplished to get here. We started our journey 10 years ago, but it doesn’t seem like that long.
It’s weird because we’ve been having fun the whole time. We’ve been focused on improving all aspects of ourselves, not only in martial arts. We’ve improved our bodies, improved our minds, and improved as individuals.
Gonna be a tough fight.
But Suga can get it done. He can crack Aljo on the chin or neck and put him straight to fucking sleep.
Let’s go. Ready to rumble in Boston.
Patience
Patience is one of the most important skills when it comes to a career in martial arts.
We have guys who come into the gym all the time who want to fight right away. I’ll tell you how we change their minds in a second.
But becoming a master of multiple disciplines and learning how to put it all together, takes a long time and experience.
So for the guys who come in eager to fight, we give them exactly what they want. We have them spar hard with some good people. Their minds change real quick.
Because after getting beat up a little, they’ll quickly realize they’re not where they thought they were.
Two things happen after this:
They’ll become patient and keep showing up
Or they’ll quit
Usually, if someone has a passion for martial arts, they’ll keep coming back. But if someone’s fighting for the wrong reasons like for chicks, Instagram pics, or to look cool…
Those people usually quit.
It’s better for them. Fighting is not for everyone.
But if you want to take anything seriously in life, you gotta learn to be patient.
Thorne
Your health is also something you need to be patient with to get results. It’s a long game.
Supplements are a great way to help you out with that. A lot of UFC fighters use Thorne as part of their daily supplement routine.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino-acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.

Being Selfish
Obviously, no one wants to feel like a selfish person. But when it comes to your goals, especially for anything worthwhile…
You have to be selfish.
Still be respectful to your partner and loved ones. Make sure their needs are met too.
You want peace in the household. If your selfishness is causing you to be a nightmare around people or causing tension, it’s gonna have the opposite effect on your goals.
In fighting or in jiu-jitsu, if you want to be a world champion and make big money, you need to be selfish. There’s no other way around it.
There are a lot of things that need to be focused on you. Your recovery, your practice, your schedule, and your routines.
Quick Hits From This Week
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 101
Cory’s Thoughts On Suga’s Thinking
Cory doesn’t like the “business-ey” way Suga thinks about his career. And I get it, but could Cory never work again in his life? Could he support his parents and buy multiple houses? Who knows. I’m sure he’s making decent bread. But this is prizefighting. It’ll be a sweet fight when those 2 get to fight though.

Taking Your Own Advice
If someone came to you with the same problem you were dealing with, what would you say? The funny thing is, a lot of people have the answer. They just don’t fucking do it.
Everyone Has Anxiety
I think with all the stimulation we’re exposed to, we create problems that don’t even exist. Everyone deals with some form of anxiety.
Easily Influenced
A sign that you’re easily influenced is if you find yourself agreeing with what everyone says. The thing to counter this is to read more and do more research.

ADCC AZ Open
I had 15 guys at the AZ Open this past weekend. Our guy Ezra took out a lot of high level guys. Benson Henderson was also there, so it was a pretty sweet time.
Cory vs. Font Recap
Not the most entertaining fight though. But still impressive. As good as Cory is at striking, it’s pretty impressive how he dominated Rob at grappling.
Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz
What a scrap. Crazy how Nate can just pressure people the entire time while being that slow-twitched. Hope they run it back in MMA.
Alcohol Makes You Depressed
It’s weird that so many people lack common sense about putting things in their bodies. How do people not get that things you put in your body affect how you feel? Strange. Sug says every time he’s partied hard, he comes back depressed because of the lack of sleep, drinking poison, and just being unhealthy.
