Decision Making Skills From Jiu-Jitsu
There are a lot of mental aspects of jiu-jitsu that translate over to other things in life.
One of the important things in jiu-jitsu is being calm. Being calm and thinking of different avenues.
These are the building blocks of good problem solving and decision making skills. And I can definitely say I’m better at those skills because of jiu-jitsu.
At the black belt level, jiu-jitsu matches are so technical. There’s 10 minute matches, you’re constantly thinking about points, advantages, time, and energy efficiency.
There are so many things to think about. So if you lose control you’re gonna gas out or make a mistake that’ll get you submitted.
You’ll learn a lot by staying calm and being rational with your thoughts while in hectic situations.
It’s definitely transferred over to my everyday normal life. Now I can look at things from the outside and make the best rational decision.
That’s why I like having my professor Augusto Tanquinho Mendes as part of our camps. He’s one of the most tactical guys when it comes to rulesets, time, and energy.
When he won ADCC, he was preparing for a 40 minute match. And the list goes on. IBJJF No Gi and Gi championships. Plus, he’s been in the UFC.
He’s just a tactical wizard. Only a handful of people in the world have accomplished what he has.
That’s why I love having Tanquinho around our team. We get to ask questions, get his outlook on certain things, and it’s been a huge benefit.
Just spreading the good word.
Work Backwards To Reach Your Goals
I think it’s important for everyone to have goals.
It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised when you ask someone what their goals are. Even when you reach your goals, set new ones.
And if you don’t accomplish your goals, don’t abandon them right away. They give you a spot to aim at. You just have to be okay with not knowing when you’ll accomplish those goals.
But with goals, I like to break them down and set up daily habits that move me closer each day.
Ask yourself, “What do I need to do each day to move myself closer to my goals?”
And do them.
I have to reiterate that it’s okay if you don’t accomplish your goals. You won’t accomplish all the goals you set for yourself.
I think if you do accomplish all your goals, you’re not setting the bar high enough.
Goals higher than yourself
Once you accomplish these goals for yourself, start looking at goals that are more selfless. Goals that have to do with helping others.
But it’s important you accomplish your own goals first. Because if you haven’t done anything, it’s gonna be hard to help others. Mainly because they won’t listen to you.
For me, my goal for the longest time was to make it to the UFC. And it didn’t happen.
So technically, I failed that goal. But because I was chasing that goal so hard, I got an opportunity to pivot to a different direction in life.
With all the things I’ve learned along the way, I had the knowledge to teach and give back.
Now when I reflect, I think I’m in a better position now than if I were to be in the UFC. So that just shows you that sometimes failed goals can put you on another avenue that’s even better than the one you were chasing.

Why I Love Being A Coach
It’s crazy what consistency and challenges can do for a person.
I’ve had multiple students who were super timid and unathletic when they first started training. I’m talking about kids who’ve never done anything athletic in their life.
It’s such a scary experience coming to the gym if you’ve never done sports before or competed in anything before. So the fact they even showed up already says a lot about them.
These kids had the mental toughness to show up day after day. Even though they were getting beat up, strangled, and pushed to exhaustion.
Now they’re some of my best students and a few have become instructors.
Everyone knows them as bad asses now, but if people knew them when they first started - they wouldn’t believe it.
I love when students like this come in and train. I get extra motivation to help them become confident ninjas.
And when they do, it’s one of the most fulfilling parts of being a coach. Building the confidence of these students and watching it translate positively in their everyday lives.
What I’m Reading
Right now I’m going through Principles again. This is one of my favorite books of all time.
And remember, if there’s a chapter you find boring, just skip it. It’s a big book and there’s a ton of good stuff inside. Make sure you underline the things that stick out to you so you can come back to revisit them later on.
The first half of the book is mainly about business, but the second half of the book has a ton of good advice. One that sticks out is:
One of the most important decisions you can make is who you ask questions of. Make sure they’re fully informed and believable. Find out who is responsible for whatever you are seeking to understand and ask them. Listening to uninformed people is worse than having no answers at all.
I feel like that’s true for a lot of things.
If you get a jiu-jitsu instructor who got their black belt from some random person and not a valid school, you could learn a ton of bad habits. And if you practice these bad habits long enough, it’ll be hard to unlearn these things. It becomes a pain in the butt to reteach yourself.
That’s why I like when new white belts come into the gym. This way I can teach them good habits and foundations from the ground up.

As you level up, you’ll find some things that don’t serve you anymore. There’s the saying that goes, “what got you here, won’t get you there.”
This might be one of the reasons why fighters keep fighting way past their prime. Too attached to the identity of a fighter.

Still doesn’t compare to a good UFC PPV. But still a good fight. Sug said Ryan was making Gervonta look small, but got too confident. I think the rehydration clause played a part in that liver shot.

You can’t roll up to a fighter with your hands up. I think the guy tried to grab Nate, only way Nate could’ve got that guillotine. Nate went off this weekend, throwing water bottles and brawling.
Aljo vs. Henry
Sug thinks Aljo is gonna take Henry’s back and choke him. I heard when Henry was out, he wasn’t training every every day or trying to get better. I have no idea how it’ll turn out.
