It’ll Be Ok, You’re Still Alive
You can really break yourself mentally from a setback.
So it’s important to look at the situation from an outsider’s perspective. Remind yourself that all the people who love you won’t love you any less.
Remind yourself that you still have your health. Be thankful if you’ve got your eyes, ears, legs, arms, a mind, and a beating heart. Be thankful for your loved ones’ health.
A lot of times, setbacks can cause you to rise up better than before and motivate you. Or they can open new doors of opportunity for you. Ones you would’ve never seen or thought of before.
Just become a king of perspective. Things could always be worse.
Looking back, I’m thankful for all my setbacks. They’ve caused me to level up in all areas and have given me the insight to give back to my students.
And if you’re not having any setbacks or failing, you’re not challenging yourself enough.
Failing forward is the way to go.
UFC 288
Aljo vs. Henry
Really looking forward to seeing who Suga faces next. We’ll see what kind of drama happens when we’re there.
I think Aljo is gonna be a lot stronger and more funky than what Henry expects. I personally don’t think Henry is training as hard as he used to. But he’s also a competitor.
So I think he’ll go in there confident and I wouldn’t be surprised if Henry gets it done either. But if I had to pick, I’m going with Aljo.
It would be fun to beat up Henry though.
Gilbert Burns vs. Belal Muhammad
Short notice fight for both guys.
Gilbert just got off a good training camp against Jorge Masvidal so he’s gonna be ready to go. Belal’s probably been training too, but probably had a much shorter camp.
This fight is also 5 rounds. But I think Gilbert’s gonna get it done.

An Important Life Lesson From My Old Coach
One of the most important life lessons I’ve ever learned came from my old coach Robert Follis.
Robert was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness just like me, but he was all about this one concept.
Do your own research.
He taught me this when I was only 20 years old and it’s stuck with me since then.
Everyone has their own set of beliefs. But those beliefs might not be what’s best for you or not even true at all.
So it’s important to not take anyone’s beliefs (even parents’) as truth. Do research for yourself.
Read books, research online, and gather up information. Developing your own perspective and opinion is one of the best things you can learn to do.
For The Parents
I’ve been asked this a couple of times so I’ll give you my best opinion.
If you’re looking to enroll your kid into jiu-jitsu, you should look for a gym that has structured classes. Not one that seems like it’s a play place.
At a young age, making sure the classes are fun is super important. But you also want to make sure your kid is actually learning. That’s the instructor’s responsibility. They need to make sure they keep their attention on the kids while making it a good time.
The kids should also know that the instructor is in charge. The instructor should have a structure to their class that’s something like drilling, practicing, and some fun games mixed in the beginning or end.
Updates
This week I’ve been kinda laying low. Been dealing with a sinus infection that’s going around.
It kinda reminds me of how important nasal breathing is for your overall health and happiness.
I usually practice nasal breathing during the day and at night. If you’re just starting, you might need mouth tape. Some people can train themselves to do it naturally though.
Nasal breathing throughout the day can sometimes change your whole mood and help with anxiety. It can just make you feel overall better.
And now that I can barely breathe through my nose, I’m seeing the difference of how much it’s taken from my life.
Do a bit of research on it. It’s crazy how no one has ever taught us that this is the most healthy way of breathing.
If you want to start, be conscious of how you’re breathing. Start taking a few nasal breaths here and there.
Quick Hits From This Week
Some goodies from James Clear
“Time assets vs. Time debts.
Time assets are choices that save you time in the future. Think: saying no to a meeting, automating a task, working on something that persists and compounds.
Time debts are choices that must be repaid and cost you time in the future. Think: saying yes to a meeting, doing sloppy work that will need to be revised, etc.
Time assets are an investment. Time debts are an expense.”
Time is the only asset we can’t buy back with money. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. So it’s super important to be conscious of where you’re giving your time. Is it going toward an asset or debt?
“Change is not a bolt of lightning that arrives with a zap. It is a bridge built brick by brick, every day, with sweat and humility and slips. It is hard work, and slow work, but it can be thrilling to watch it take shape.”
That’s why the power of consistency and discipline will be your best friend. Even habits aren’t formed overnight, it takes around 21 days to stick. If you learn to be consistent, you’ll be able to change anything you want.
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 87
On this episode of the pod, I was joined by my buddy Stuart Cooper. Stuart came on the TimboSugarShow back in the day when we were doing it out of my bedroom.
Teaching at Tiger Muay Thai
Stuart was traveling the world filming training videos. Eventually, he became the head jiu-jitsu coach at Tiger Muay Thai. But he kept getting super staph infections and those antibiotics messed up his stomach pretty good.
How Has Teaching Helped Your Jiu-jitsu
Stuart said that teaching has definitely made his jiu-jitsu better. I think it’s like writing. If you can’t write down a thought, you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Teaching makes you think of things on a way different level.
One of the most important decisions
One of the most important decisions you can make is who you ask questions of. Make sure they’re fully informed and believable. Find out who is responsible for whatever you are seeking to understand and ask them. Listening to uninformed people is worse than having no answers at all. - Ray Dalio
I saw this a lot in jiu-jitsu over the years. There weren’t a lot of good black belts back in the day. There were a lot of instructors that didn’t have a good understanding of jiu-jitsu at all. I can tell when brown belts come to my gym and get whooped on by blue belts.
Power of consistency
When people trust that you’ll do what you say when you say it, not only will they want to work with you, but they’ll want you to be successful. You can’t build anything meaningful when you show up inconsistently. - Shane Parrish
I see this with coaches. The person who comes once a week isn’t gonna get the same help as someone who comes in 5X a week.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 235
Marcus’s UFC debut
Our boy Marcus took a fight on 3 days notice and won a bonus! LFG! He looked super sharp. And we know how hard that dude works. Couldn’t have happened to a better guy.
Song vs. Simon
Song’s a problem. Looked real fast, didn’t load up on punches. Bantamweight’s the most stacked division.
Chad Mendes vs. Eddie Alvarez
What a fight. Eddie is so sweet to watch. Every time he gets dropped, he gets back up and keeps going.
Aljo vs. Henry
Henry hasn’t fought anyone as big as Aljo. No one’s forced him to grapple before. There’s still a chance Henry cracks Aljo. Hoping Henry wins so we can beat up that dork, but I think Aljo gets it done though. Then again, Aljo’s eating burgers and fries 10 days out, that’s not good with a big weight cut.

Anytime I have a setback or a bad day I imagine going to the nearest hospital cancer ward and telling people in the waiting room about it. So many people would swap lives in a heartbeat. Appreciate these weekly reminders to be a better person, thank you
Another great one
