My New Gym Was Almost Ready To Open Until…
We hit a fucking sprinkler.
It was completely my fault.
There were 6 of us and we decided to move the boxing ring over to a new spot.
But my dumb ass forgot to look at the ceiling and we rammed right into a sprinkler head.
I didn’t know how to shut it off or do shit. So I’m standing there watching 1800 gallons of water cover the suite like a torrential flood.
I go outside in the alley and I’m looking at the sky for an answer. Because I really didn’t know what the fuck to do. Meanwhile, this water is coming down heavy.
So I called 911. Maybe 911 has someone who specializes in broken sprinklers.
I told them, ‘Hey it’s not an emergency or anything, but my gym is getting flooded. Can I talk to someone about this?”
They ended up sending firefighters and they shut it off.
Well, at the least the gym wasn’t done yet 🤷♂️
We had to rip out all the carpet. Couple grand in damages, life moves on.
But there’s a life lesson here, believe it or not.
In a situation like this, it’s easy to freak the fuck out. But that can lead to more bad decisions and making the situation fucking worse.
So when things get hectic, I’ve trained myself to calm down.
This is something I picked up while fighting and being a black belt in jiu-jitsu. If you let your emotions get in the way in the middle of a fight, you’re going to get caught.
Same thing in hectic situations. If you let your emotions get out of control, it means you’re not in control.
So if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, step away and take a breath.
In Other News…
Ever have a nightmare about losing or breaking a tooth?
This past week, I was munching on some mangoes while playing some COD. And suddenly, I felt something sharp in the corner of my mouth.
I reach in and pull out half my fucking tooth. Fuck.
It doesn’t hurt, but what did I say before? Stay calm.
I ended up seeing the dentist and they’re gonna put a cap on it or something. It sucks because Thanksgiving is this week, but whatever.
It’ll get fixed and life moves on.
Early Picks For Dec. 3rd UFC Fight
Bryan Barbarena vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Bryan is always a good pick. He’s coming off a big win against Robbie Lawler.
Dos Anjos is the former lightweight champ, he’s big and durable. But he’s coming off a KO loss against Rafael Fiziev.
Both southpaws. But I think Bryan can get the job done.
Scott Holtzman vs. Clay Guida
Scott is a big athletic kid. We’ve trained with him for awhile.
He checks every single box from top to bottom. So we know he’s going into that fight prepared.
Obviously Clay is a legend in this sport and still doing his thing. Guy has been around since UFC 64.
But I think Scott is going to be a little too much for Clay that night.
Those are my 2 picks, but I’m looking forward to a lot of the other fights.
Looking forward to Tai Tuivasa, hopefully Tai gets the job done.
Looking forward to watching Eryck Anders.
Jonathan Pearce vs. Darren Elkins is also gonna be a banger!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving Guys!
Thursday night it’s just gonna be me and Mariah. First time in a long time.
But Mariah is all about making the best quality stuff with the best ingredients. Yeah, it can be a little more expensive.
But at least you don’t get that post-Thanksgiving grogginess and feel shitty after stuffing your face with some good food.
What are you guys looking forward to chowing down on?
I can’t wait for:
Mash potatoes.
Turkey.
Green beans.
Sweet potatoes.
Fuck it, I’m looking forward to it all. I just love Thanksgiving.
We’ll probably have an open mat workout Thursday and Friday too. Burn off some calories.
But if you’re reading this, I hope you have a good Thanksgiving and enjoy everyone around you.
Book I’m Reading This Week
Discipline is Destiny: The Power of Self-Control by Ryan Holiday
Still cruising through this book, and I think it’s required reading for everyone. Ryan Holiday has other good books like Ego Is The Enemy and The Obstacle Is The Way.
But if you pick this book up, don’t expect to put your highlighter down. You can highlight every other line in this masterpiece.
Nugget from pg. 254
Being a boss is a job. But being a leader is something you earn. You get elevated to that plane by your self-discipline. By moments of sacrifice like this, when you take the hit or the responsibility on behalf of someone else.
Like I said before, everything that happened with the gym is my fault.
It was my fault for not looking up. It was my fault for not scouting the area.
So I had to handle the consequences.
The leader puts others before themselves and the leader takes the hit.
Obviously the situation sucked. But I’ll become better because of it.
Nugget from pg. 256
We have to show, not tell: first in line for danger, last in line for rewards. First in line for duty, last in line for recognition. To lead, you have to bleed. Figuratively speaking. But sometimes also literally. Is it really unfair? Or is it what you signed up for? And by the way, isn’t it also what you get paid the big bucks for? That’s the privilege of command.
I know I have a massive responsibility every morning when I wake up.
There are people who look up to me.
I’m responsible for all the students who train at my academy.
I’m responsible for all the fighters I help prep for their upcoming fights.
And I’m responsible for you reading this newsletter and for everyone who watches my content.
So it’s important for me to never stop learning and become the best leader I can be.
Quick Hits From This Week
“Power is influence over external events. Peace is influence over internal events.” - James Clear
This goes along with this entire week of events. But there are some times when things are out of your control. And know this. Any suffering you feel from things out of your control, is in your control. You have complete control over your own peace.
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 64
If you plan on being a professional fighter, plan to be broke.
It’s gonna be a bumpy ride. So it’s important to feel rich and lean on your passion for martial arts. I always tell amateur fighters to live with their parents if they can, so they can save money. I know young guys want their own place so they can bring chicks back, I get it. But keep in mind what’s really important here and what’s the ultimate goal.
Adopting a continual evolution mindset.
Clayton Carpenter joined me on the pod this past week. Future UFC flyweight champ in my opinion. But Clayton says his continual evolution mindset is what keeps him going. In his words, this means to not go off the deep end on any side of the spectrum. So not blowing up after fights like Paddy. Instead, he prefers living the life of a martial artist, not only just for training camps.
One thing that helps Clayton is finding non-guilty pleasures like healthy desserts. He plans on sharing some of his healthy dessert recipes on YouTube in the future, so be on the lookout for that.
Natural nuts or porn?
Clayton practices semen retention. He makes good points about how porn can make you develop an addiction for instant self-gratification. And if you’re jerking off every day, it could be affecting your relationships and creating unhealthy habits for yourself.
It’s the same thing for weed. If you’re smoking every day and not progressing in life, might want to put the weed down for a bit. Using weed to escape your shitty days, it’s like you’re hiding from reality. I always say to go earn it. If you’ve had a really fucking productive day, then have a rip. You’ve earned it.
The importance of being yourself.
It takes balls to be yourself on camera. Clayton says this is one of the biggest things holding him back from creating content. He doesn’t want to deal with all the hate and he has younger kids as students. So he doesn’t want his young students to see or hear inappropriate shit from him. But my advice is to just let go of all of that. I know I’m a good person. I have healthy relationships. I’m healthy. I’m spreading a good message. So fuck it, just be you and show that you’re a normal human being like everyone else. And if people don’t like it, then that’s their problem.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 213
Sug going to Russia for Thanksgiving?
Suga got an enticing offer from someone in Russia to attend a birthday party this Thursday. Stupid money. Should he go? Or should he take his family out to eat? Let me know in the comments.
Getting sponsors as an amateur
It’s completely possible to get sponsors as an amateur fighter. In fact, that was the only way I was able to train full-time. My advice is to go to local companies and put together a marketing package for them - IG posts, stories, spot on shorts, etc. Don’t be afraid to reach out, usually local companies really like supporting local fighters.
Building your brand
My advice is to be yourself. That’s how Sug built his brand. Sometimes if you force it, it sounds fake and cringey. Polarizing personalities don’t work for everyone. Either way, it’s important you put some effort in building one so you can make money outside of fighting and after your fighting career is over.
