Being Dangerous
Jordan Peterson says:
A harmless man is not a good man. A good man is a dangerous man who has that under voluntary control.
I think most people haven’t faced a lot of adversity in life.
For me, I’ve been in martial arts for so long that I’ve been beaten up so many fucking times. Even as a kid, I got beat up a lot.
But the difference with me is, I sought those challenges. I always challenged the best guy in the room.
When I went to Team Quest as a 4-1 pro, I tried to get a round with the best guys. Chael, Yushin Okami, Matt Lindland, or Rick Story.
I knew I was gonna get beat up. But I wanted to see how good I could potentially get.
All of this has helped me keep the aggressive and violent side under control. Even some of the guys I’ve met who can whoop your ass without hesitation, they’re some of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Super nice, respectful, and willing to help.
But your workouts become an outlet to let all of that energy out. Getting in the practice room, going as hard as you can with teammates, or going hard on weights.
After doing that twice a day, you just want to be nice when you get home.
The Chinese proverb does say “It’s better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war.”
Side Hustles While Fighting
When your brand becomes bigger, there are more opportunities to build businesses around it. Sug is a great example of this.
But when you’re young and you’re just starting to see traction, I think you have to be committed to the craft. There’s so much to get good at.
Boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. And just putting it all together.
Not only that, you have to get physically stronger and level up your endurance.
All of this is a full-time job if you’re just getting started with your career. Even in between practices, you should be studying.
Watch world champions in different arts. Watch film. Watch UFC fighters you can emulate.
But once you get to a level where you’re fighting for one of the big shows and you’re getting steady money coming in - that’s when you can start to look into other things.
At this point, practices are more routine and you have an idea of how much time you have. You should still be studying, but you can start to be creative in other things.
I think it’s good to start thinking of hobbies that can make you a little bit of money. Maybe it’s YouTube, podcasting, or selling merch. Something that’s not taking up a whole lot of your time and not physically demanding.
Keep in mind, you don’t need to figure this out right away. You’ll have opportunities come your way just by being in the fight game and being around the right people.
Thorne
Have any goals to get healthier this summer? A good supplement can help you out.
For a lot of UFC fighters, the brand of supplement they use is Thorne.
I also personally use Thorne as part of my daily supplementation.
It’s third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino-acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.
Use the link below and Throne will hook you up with a 15% discount on your order.

Becoming More Curious
Sometimes I get people who tell me, “Damn, I wish I was into reading as much as you or wish I was more passionate about learning.”
And you can be. I don’t think it’s your fault either.
I think the school system has negatively affected people’s perception of reading, writing, and studying. In school, they’re forcing you to read a book you could give two fucks about. They’re forcing you to learn and study subjects that aren’t interesting to you.
So when people think about reading, writing, or studying - they’re like, “fuck that!”
I know I hated reading, writing, and studying for the longest time. I read one book all through my high school career. I think it was called The Hatchet.
I genuinely thought reading was for pussies. Then I met Robert Follis while I was at Team Quest.
I saw all these books that lined his wall and shelves. Books about psychology, philosophy, and life. And I thought, “Wow, there’s some cool shit here.”
There’s gotta be something that interests you. Something’s gotta pique your interest even a little bit. When you start to dive into it, maybe write about your thoughts.
That’s how it starts. From there, it could spark a completely different interest.
Maybe you don’t really have a heavy interest in anything right now and that’s okay. The more you put yourself around different people, and the more things you try, you’ll find something.
And when you’re young, 18, 19, 20 - you don’t need to have it figured out. Don’t worry. Just keep doing positive shit, keep yourself healthy, and something will pop up.
Plateau
I think when you get to a high level of anything, you’re going to plateau.
This can happen in the beginning too. And this can be discouraging for anyone learning any new skill.
But as long as you enjoy what you’re doing and love the process of what you’re doing, plateauing shouldn’t break you.
Maybe look to change one little thing. You just gotta know and expect a plateau is gonna happen and just push through. Things take time to get good at and be efficient at.
So stay mentally strong and ride those plateaus until you level up.
Personal/Business Goals
Sometimes it’s frustrating because I have so many things on my plate that I can’t just focus on one thing.
I want to compete at the IBJJF Worlds and Opens, The ADCC trials and opens. But I also wanna make sure I’m in good shape to where I can confidently go in there to win.
If I can’t go in there to win, it’s not worth it for me to show up.
I try not to be so negative about it. I try to be grateful for everything that’s going on.
And we have such a huge opportunity with Suga right now to win the world title against Aljo. I want to put a lot of focus on that.
But competition wise, I wanna make sure I’m also improving my jiu-jitsu. I want to show up at the trials ready to compete.
Business wise, I’m trying to grow my audience across my platforms. YouTube, Instagram, and the Patreon Brotherhood. I enjoy being creative there and making content. And of course, growing my gym memberships.
Quick Hits From This Week
Some goodies from the man James Clear.
“Just because improvements aren't visible doesn't mean they aren't happening.
You're not going to see the number change each time you step on the scale. You're not going to finish a chapter each time you sit down to write.
Early wins come easy. Lasting wins require a lifestyle.”
The lifestyle is one of consistency. You just gotta keep showing up and doing the work. You don’t know when that breakthrough is coming, so focus on the process. What I do know is that the breakthrough won’t come if you quit.
“One of the most valuable skills in life is being able to see another person's perspective.
If you're going to someone's house, think about how it might feel to be the host. If you're creating a product, spend as much time as possible thinking like the customer. If you're calling customer service, think about how it might feel to be on the other end of the conversation.
The more clearly you understand the viewpoint of your spouse or customer or coworker, the better positioned you are to find a solution.”
I’ve said this many times. Become a king of perspective. It’ll change your life.
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 91
On this episode of the pod, I was joined by my buddy Kyle Hanan. Kyle’s an inspiration dude, he’s battling terminal cancer and living his life to the fullest.
Developing happiness and passion
I’ve noticed that when something traumatic happens to someone, that person is more happy later on sometimes. Kyle doesn’t really understand it either, but it’s happened to him. When he got diagnosed and started battling his cancer, he was able to get happiness from the smallest things.
Living as an amateur fighter
Our buddy Ezra Elliot was on the pod and he talked to us about the amateur fighting life. Like I said before if you’re gonna be a fighter, be ready to be broke. Especially in the beginning. And look, Ezra still finds ways to eat clean on a budget, so there are no excuses for anyone.
Khamzat vs. Usman
I hope they make this fight. If I had to pick, I’d go with Kamaru, especially if it’s 5 rounds. He’s so good at pacing himself. With 3 rounds, Khamzat has a better chance. But hopefully, this happens.
Best Bantamweight
Aljo’s the best bantamweight in history. Hands down. I know Aljo said some stuff on Sug, but hey if you watch the pod, we do something called humor. No idea why Aljo doesn’t have more support. Either way, we’re making history in August.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 238
What kind of rizz sticks out
Naomi likes vibes and cheddar. No beta males who can’t pay for their own shit.
Communication in relationships
I think with most girls, it’s the lying that ends the relationship. So as long as you’re communicating openly, it’s all good.
Finding Schmitty a GF
Like Naomi said, it’s a mindset. That’s where confidence comes from. And the club sounds like the venue to find Schmitty a girl to smash.
