Learning To Be Happy
At least a million people’s dreams would be answered if they traded places with you.
A powerful quote by Sam Harris that I think about a lot.
For those of you who aren’t in your “ideal” situation, it’s easy to sit and be negative about it.
But I would encourage you to be a king of perspective. Things could always be worse.
If you have water, food, a roof over your head, electricity, and your health - you’re in a way better spot than most people. You gotta remember that.
This will help you be thankful for the little things and what you have.
Everyone’s on their phone all day every day. So it’s easy to scroll on social media and see others having opportunities or things you want too. That only makes you feel worse.
You’re sitting there feeling sorry for yourself and now you’re comparing yourself to others.
It’s a toxic habit you should try to stop. Unless you’re using the comparison as motivation to pump you up.
But if you’re not where you want to be right now, I think it’s important to find something you enjoy and slowly improve at it.
It’s a great way to be happy and get out of your head.
This week I had a hard wrestling practice with my students. And it’s really crazy how happy I was after it.
But you can find that within anything. Anything that’ll make you push yourself to get better.
So if you’re being lazy and negative and not doing anything to improve yourself…
Pretty good chance you’re gonna be fucking unhappy. So deal with it or get up and change it.
The Boring Things Matter
The boring stuff is usually what works and wins at the highest level.
People get knocked out by straight rights, hooks, or pass guard with good basic fundamental techniques.
That’s why in the beginning, a lot of the fundamentals need to be drilled over and over. Until it becomes second nature. Until it gets boring.
That way, if you find yourself in a high-pressure situation like a real fight or competition, you’re not thinking about the move. You’re just doing it.
If you’re fighting in MMA, there’s a ton of fundamentals you could master. Learning how to punch, bringing your hands back to your face, turning your hips over on kicks, knees, elbows, sprawling, etc.
These are things that are easy to learn, but take a long time to master. Unless you drill them over and over.
Once you dial in all the basic fundamentals, you can start bouncing around to different arts or focusing on mastering different moves.
For example, in jiu-jitsu, you focus on guard passing until you’re bored of it. Then you can focus on sweeps.
If you’ve been boxing for a long time, switch to kickboxing. Watch some old K-1 or Glory fights. Watch Muay Thai.
There are so many different worlds within any skill. So it’s hard to get bored if you really love what you’re doing.
When you watch experts at the highest level, they’re all so good at the fundamentals.
Focus on mastery, you won’t get bored.
Thorne
Taking supplements every day can be boring too. But long term, great for your health.
A lot of UFC fighters use Thorne as part of their daily supplement routine.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.

The Best Therapy
This is for all the readers who are thinking about training but haven’t tried it yet.
Like I said in the first section of the newsletter, a lot of people are face-down on their phones all day. Scrolling for small dopamine hits.
Most people aren’t present. They’re in their heads, making up problems and creating anxiety about the future.
But when you’re training, it’s like releasing yourself from all the negativity and distraction.
Your mind gets to only focus on one thing.
It might feel like a break for your brain. It might feel therapeutic.
All the problems from your life temporarily leave you alone. No worrying about bills, relationship issues, or stress.
Just focusing on getting a good session in.
When you get your heart rate high and push yourself to exhaustion, you might have thoughts of quitting. But then you don’t quit.
Boy, you’ll feel like a million bucks after, trust me. That confidence will build.

Staying Motivated
I’m not sure if I can give the best advice for this. But it’s easy for me to stay motivated because I have students and projects that need me. My lifestyle requires me to stay motivated and I really like what I’m doing. So I gotta keep getting better.
Stick To What Makes You Weird
