Red Hawk Essentials #57
The Duties of Being A Leader, Training Room vs. Actual Fight, Finding Peace
The Duties of Being A Leader
Sometimes the responsibilities of a leader are uncomfortable.
For example, having hard conversations. The thought of these conversations makes people squirm or gives them anxiety. But in the end, it’s what’s best for the company or in my case, the student.
And always, always be honest. Sometimes the truth stings.
But it’s going to be hard for a fighter to get better if he’s surrounded by yes men. Sometimes you need that brutally honest opinion that you’re doing shit wrong.
Another thing is respect. Coming into a leadership position requires you to earn people’s respect.
If people don’t respect you, they won’t listen or take your advice to begin with. Sometimes people walk into a leadership position and expect people to respect them right away.
You gotta earn it. And that requires action.
Right now, I’m reading a book called The Art of Leadership. It talks about how to communicate and deal with all types of people. Which is important because everyone is so different.
Some people don’t like being told what to do and others have no problem following directions.
Being a good leader is a whole other thing too.
Some people just do dumb shit and fuck off. They get burnt out and use their title as an excuse to be lazy.
I’m trying my best to avoid ever being in that position. And I think constantly learning about leadership will help me in that aspect.
Not everyone is a natural-born leader. But you can definitely develop the necessary skills.
You just have to be okay with being uncomfortable.
Training Room vs. Actual Fight
I can honestly say that I’ve never fought to my true potential.
I’ve been in the training room with some of the best guys in the world. And oftentimes, I’ve beaten them.
But it’s the training room.
Underneath the bright lights, it’s different. I really don’t know what it is. Maybe you’re a bit anxious because there’s a lot on the line and your livelihood depends on you winning.
For me, there was always so much pressure. I needed the money and I needed the win to keep moving my career forward. It was always on my mind.
This was also before I learned about mediation. I really think mediation can really help you fight at your full potential.
You learn how to be present, stay grounded, and enter a flow state that fully represents your training.
This happens to a lot of fighters. And it might be because they’re just comfortable in the gym. Maybe their training partners aren’t trying to really hurt them and they know that. Or maybe they know there’s really nothing on the line.
Not really a lot of pressure inside the training room.
It’s a constant battle to show up as your true self on fight day. And I think meditation can help out a lot on that side.

Finding Peace
If you’re a fighter, then you know the feeling when you have a fight scheduled.
It’s on your mind A LOT.
You wake up thinking about the fight. You go to sleep thinking about the fight. All you want to do is train, train, and train.
At least for me, whenever I had a fight booked, I couldn’t find inner peace. Suga on the other hand is really good at this.
He knows when to start thinking about the fight and when to stop thinking about it. Not sure where he learned it from.
But I think you can quiet down those emotions and find stillness through perspective. Being a King of Perspective is powerful, I’ve said it many times before.
It’s not the end of the world if you lose. There are a lot worse things that could happen.
It’s only competition. If you’re healthy and your family’s healthy, that’s a lot to be thankful for.
This is coming from someone who’s been in and out of the surgery room plenty of times. I had my jaw wired shut, biceps torn, knee and foot surgeries, etc.
Just getting the opportunity to train is a blessing. Coming out of practice better and healthy is even better.
Injuries are inevitable in this sport. And trust me, when you’re injured, the only thing you want to do is be healthy and train again.
I think inner peace is something everyone should strive for.
Easier said than done and different for everyone. But there are a lot of books you can learn from.
Get some peace in your life and be happy.

Red Hawk Recap Ep. 118
On this episode of the pod, I was joined by my buddy Drakkar Klose who is coming off a slam KO and Mindset Mike.
Relationship Psychology
Couples who have known each other for a couple of months and get married, that’s probably not a smart idea. Mindset Mike says people often confuse connection and infatuation with compatibility.
You Don’t Need Confidence To Win
Mindset Mike says you don’t need confidence to win, it just makes it easier. For most people, they’re waiting for things to prove to themselves before they become confident.
3 Layers To Build A Top Athlete
Physical, Psychological, and Heart. A lot of people train harder to overcome their confidence issues. But Mike says feelings of gratitude, courage, and empathy can overcome the lack of confidence and physical capabilities.
Mindset Coming Back From A Loss
Drakkar’s focus was on staying present and not getting too amped up. And it was tough for him at this specific fight card because they kept showing his loss to Beneil on the screens. But he got the job done. The slam heard around the world!
Importance Of Energy Levels
Mike took some data from the lacrosse teams and found something interesting. When a team’s energy level is higher, they tend to win more. He says that it’s important to find a neutral energy level for you.

Finding the largest burden you can bear and bear it. A lot of people agree with what Jordan Peterson always says, but I’m not sure about this one.

Great read for sure! Thanks Timbo I definitely agree with needing respect as a coach, sometimes I find it hard to do exactly what my coach says because he’s never boxed before just trained, he’s never been in that ring in front a crowd to really feel the difference so i questions things sometimes but he’s the coach for a reason so I try and listen
