Red Hawk Essentials #59
Being Comfortable Alone Is A Superpower, Gaining The Confidence Early On,
Being Comfortable Alone Is A Superpower
Time alone is invaluable.
A lot of people are lonely this time of year. But anyone can learn how to be comfortable alone, have fun by themselves, and keep a positive mindset.
Look at it from a different perspective. If you’re by yourself, you’re lucky. You can research, watch, and learn about whatever you want.
There are plenty of people with a spouse and kids who are completely miserable. They never get to do what they want to do.
But I don’t think it’s possible to be cool with yourself alone if you have low self-esteem.
Be careful with your self-talk. If you’re always down on yourself, calling yourself a piece of shit, or ugly then you’re constantly gonna compare yourself to others.
You’re gonna pick up that phone, look at how happy other people are, and wonder why you’re not. Or look at what other people have and wonder why you don’t have those things too.
It just creates a negative feedback loop that’s hard to escape from.
You’ll realize all of this if you just meditate. We’ve talked about this plenty of times.
But if you sit your ass down and be still, you’ll see what kind of thoughts go through your mind. Stuff that you wouldn’t notice throughout the day.
Don’t let the negative self-talk become a habit. They’re thoughts, but it doesn’t mean they’re true.
If you live by yourself, I recommend you focus on your health. Work out. Take a cold shower. Eat healthy.
If you’re eating and living like shit, you’re just gonna perpetuate those negative thoughts.
Just make yourself do it.
You’ll get a little more confidence. You’ll feel good. You’ll be a little more creative.
It’s a little easier to hang out with yourself when you’re not being a bitch. Just saying.
Gaining The Confidence Early On
I shat the bed at state championships in wrestling.
I was supposed to be in the finals with another teammate. But in the semi-finals, I got pinned. And it just became a downward spiral from there.
I kept losing and kept getting more pissed. So after that, I decided to fight.
But I lost my first fight.
And going back to the previous section, my negative self-talk was loud. I started thinking that I was a loser bitch.
Luckily, I was super interested in fighting so I took another fight. If I won, I’d keep fighting. If I lost, I’d quit.
From there, I won 9 straight. In the 8th and 9th fights, I won two amateur titles from Fusion Fight League and Fight Force. They were the two major promotions in Montana at the time.
That experience gave me all the confidence I needed to go all in.
You’ve probably heard me say that confidence is the number one thing in a fighter.
It completely changed my self-talk.
I started thinking, “Wait. If other people were able to make this their life, why can’t I?”
I already had a great work ethic. And I got super passionate about fighting.
So I made it my life.
If I only got beat up during my amateur career, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.

2023 Reflection
2023 was a good ass year.
Everything just went to a whole other level. The gym, the confidence, and the people around me.
I’ve gotten a ton of confidence in running the gym and being a coach. And also confident that we’re doing the right things now that Sug is the UFC champ.
I’m really proud of all my students. All the amateurs on the team and all my jiu-jitsu students had a great year.
This goes for everyone who just started training, had goals to compete, or wanted to try MMA. Everyone crushed it.
I’ve also made some great relationships with some powerful people. It’ll be cool to see what kind of opportunities come from that, but just having good relationships is key to happiness.
For the majority of this year, I’ve been healthy. I know I always seem to be dealing with some injury that’s pissing me off.
But 2023 was the year that I made a commitment to myself by not letting injuries take away from my happiness.
When an injury happens, I find out what I need to do to get better. Then I focus on other things I can learn and improve on.
So I’ve been good about dealing with the setbacks. Making sure my happiness isn’t affected and making sure my life doesn’t come to a halt.
If I’m constantly depressed or pissed off from injuries, it’s gonna be a long fucking life. Especially in combat sports.
Right now, I’m recovering from a major Achilles surgery. Blew the fucking thing out.
But that’s how life goes. It ebbs and flows. You just gotta ride it.
I’ve been listening to Chris Williamson’s podcast, Modern Wisdom. If you haven’t checked it out, I highly recommend it.
But he talks about how important it is to enjoy the journey and the climb. The chase for what you want, that’s where the fun is.
It reminds me of when Sug and I were broke not too long ago. Living in that ghetto apartment.
I can say I’m not more happy now than I was back then.
I’m more at ease and comfortable now. But I was just as happy back then chasing the goals.
Overall, this year has made me hungrier.
I have people and students who look up to me. The Patreon members who support me. So I cannot be complacent.
I have to continue reading books, learning, and getting better as a person.
2023 was amazing. 2024 will be even better if I can keep the same good habits and routines.
Quick Hits From This Week
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 120
Building Things Up, Not Tearing It Down
It’s weird because some people tear others down without knowing. I think it comes down to insecurity. All that energy spent focusing on others, could be focused on improving yourself.
The Way To Live A Full Life…
These years are going by so damn quick. If you’re waiting to pursue something you’re interested in, don’t wait. Just start. I know so many people who want to be in better shape before starting jiu-jitsu.
Karate Combat
The Saudis bought it and they’re throwing around some good bread. Apparently, they offered Mike Perry $400K to step in there. Also thought Benson won his fight, but not sure how they score their fights. Cool show though.
Best Way To Stay Dialed During Holidays
You just do it. It’s easy to be lazy and you know you’re about to feast, then go get a little workout in. Get in the habit of earning these things.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 265
Conor McGregor BEGGING FOR A FIGHT
Conor wants to get back in and his patience is wearing thin. UFC 300 looks like the return of Conor, but we’ll see. It should be a stacked card from top to bottom.
Joe Rogan "Fighters Wasting Career Outside UFC"
The bigger opportunity and platform is in the UFC. I don’t think any fighter would doubt that. If you think short term, you might get paid better in other organizations in the beginning. But if you win and trust your skills, the bread is in the UFC.
Shifting Your Mindset
The Lord has been testing me. I got sick as shit. My foot hurts and I haven’t been able to work out. But I shifted my perspective and changed my whole night. It’s a superpower.
Best Habit To Develop for Success
Sug and I learned how to strengthen and focus our minds at an early age. No one really teaches you about this stuff. So I think it starts with reading books we’re into and just getting started.
