Red Hawk Essentials #63
Discipline Or Passion First? Chill Time Is Essential, Stylistic Nightmares
Discipline Or Passion First?
I know that a lot of people wish they were more disciplined. And I also know that having a passion could help you develop discipline.
So here’s my take if you’re someone who’s lost in the middle somewhere.
I think you should develop discipline around the things that matter in your life first.
Take care of your health.
I’m talking about things like working out, getting good sleep, staying hydrated, and eating clean.
People forget how food can affect their moods. If you eat like shit, your blood sugar is gonna spike up and down like a rollercoaster throughout the day.
You don’t need to eat clean 100% of the time but try to work your way up to 80/20 or 90/10.
It took me years to start eating healthy.
But once I saw how it affected me physically and mentally, there was no way I could go back.
I’m way more creative, less moody, less reactive, and just feel so much better.
And don’t forget to stay hydrated. Most people don’t even know they’re dehydrated.
I think if you could stay disciplined on those 4 things, it’ll make everything else so much easier.
So when you find a passion (or if you already have one), that discipline from you taking care of yourself will translate into you doing what you need to do for your passion.
Because with anything, there’s gonna be ups and downs. There’s gonna be low points where that discipline is gonna come in handy.
Just accept them and ride the waves.
Discipline also means taking back the power in your life.
You are in control. You decide what you wanna do or don’t wanna do.
Without discipline, you don’t have control. You’re living life depending on what your mood is that day.
Take that as you will. Hopefully that helps.
Chill Time Is Essential
I have a lot of responsibilities in my day to day. I have the gym, I have the coffee shop, I have students, and I have content to think about.
Giving all those things my time and energy is important, but also making time for myself is just as important.
Chill time. Time where I can spend doing whatever I want. I can sit and read, watch a show, or just lay on the hammock.
If you do things where you need to be creative, that chill time or alone time is usually when the best ideas come.
So I have to make sure I get my chill time. One of the things that helps is learning to say no.
Every day it’s something different. People want you to come to some event or go on a podcast.
If it’s not that important, just say no. Be respectful and just say you can’t make it.
That stuff cuts into my chill time. And that’s way more important.
And if you have a partner or family at home, those relationships are the most important.
Those people need to be good. Sometimes I know it can get hectic. You have to work a lot, your partner has to work a lot.
That’s where it’s important to communicate effectively. I know it’s easier said than done.
Try seeing it from their perspective. They have different programming than you. Don’t force your perspective onto them, good chance it won’t work.
If you love the person, sometimes you have to compromise. It is what it is.
And never bitch or complain about your partner to your friends.
What are your friends supposed to say? They don’t know everything that’s going on.
If you’re constantly blaming your partner for things they do wrong, try this.
Blame them for stuff they’re doing good. And be thankful for the small things like making dinner or doing the dishes.
See what happens.
Thorne
In the market for a new supp?
A bunch of UFC fighters use Thorne as part of their daily health routine.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.
Use the link below and Throne will hook you up with an additional 15% discount on your order.
Stylistic Nightmares
What do you do when you’re matched up against someone who’s the perfect counter to your style?
For newer people, it’s gonna be harder to add new techniques.
For some vets, it’s better to add little things instead of completely changing the style.
We saw BJ Penn try to change his entire style and it looked terrible.
My suggestion is to find sparring partners who can exploit your weaknesses.
Let’s say you’re a Philly shell guy and you stand up tall and flat-footed.
Find sparring partners who are really good at hiding their takedowns and getting into double-legs.
Make sure you record these sessions and rewatch them with your coach.
Find spots where your partner is making tactical errors. Maybe it’s against the fence or maybe they’re overcommitting on punches.
Once you bring those tactical errors to light, now you know what to look out for.
From there, you can create your game plan. But getting good looks with sparring partners, that’s where the juice is.
