Traveling For Camps
You see fighters travel away from their families and loved ones for fight camps all of the time.
Even I had to do this back in the day. When I was training in Oregon, Mariah and I lived separately.
Luckily, she has her passion for her horses. And I had my passion for fighting. So that definitely made it easier.
Plus, we’re both happy people. We don’t need each other to be happy.
I think a lot of couples think that. They need their partner or else they won’t feel whole or happy.
I personally don’t think that’s healthy. I don’t think your happiness should come from someone else.
Anthony de Mello talks about this in his book Awareness. It’s a super deep book and it’s pretty harsh.
I think it’s a really good book to listen to or read. You don’t have to read it cover to cover. Just skim through it and underline some things.
So with the distance, we tried our best to stay in touch over the phone.
I’m not a big texter. And I don’t like the whole asking about your day and stuff. It’s the same shit as yesterday.
Just do your best with the distance. And I think the most important lesson here is to learn to be okay away from your partner or loved ones.
Overtraining
When I was younger, my mindset was I’d rather be overtrained than undertrained.
I spent a lot of time with Benson Henderson when he was champ.
Everyone’s genes are different. Benson is a freak athlete who can spend months on the couch and hop back in doing 5x5 min rounds.
I got the carnie genes from my parents, so I think my body breaks down faster.
Trying to push that limit is probably why I had so many surgeries. I’d be trying to train so hard in the morning and afternoon every day of the week.
So by the end of fight camp, my body would feel run down.
When I was cutting down to 155, I was sparring hard 6 days before my fight. So I’d be going in there beat up and sometimes with a concussion.
If I had to guess, I was walking into that cage at 60-70%.
But that’s not to say that being sore is an excuse for not training hard.
I tell my guys all the time, that you have to push yourself. Even when you’re sore.
Especially when you’re young, you need to learn how to push and grind. Put yourself in uncomfortable situations.
But you have to keep up with your other healthy habits too. Eating clean, hydrating yourself, keeping up with your supplements, stretching, and moving around before bed.
These are important things that are gonna help you recover well in between these hard sessions.
Be smart with your body. We got a Thorne link below that will get you 15% off or if you’re in the Patreon, you can get 30% off.
Thorne
In the market for a new supp?
A bunch of UFC fighters use Thorne as part of their daily health routine.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.
Use the link below and Throne will hook you up with an additional 15% discount on your order.
Insecurities
I’ve never met one person who didn’t have insecurities, especially in fighting.
The real question is, what are you insecure about?
Is it your ground game? Well then, commit yourself to wrestling and jiu-jitsu.
Actually commit. Not just show up to practice. Learn about the sport itself.
That’s what really helped me. Because I was close-minded for a while. There was actually a time when I believed I didn’t need jiu-jitsu.
My mindset back then was I’m just gonna sprawl on these punks and whoop their ass.
… until I got submitted. Until I met an actual black belt in jiu-jitsu and he hit me with a kimura.
I remember just feeling lost. I didn’t know what to do in that position.
After that, I was like fuck this. I need to commit myself to jiu-jitsu and actually learn it.
There’s a reason why they award you points for passing guard, for knee on belly, for mounting, and for taking the back in jiu-jitsu.
These are all positions in a fight where you’re whooping someone’s ass.
In wrestling, learn how to properly sprawl. Learn how to stuff someone’s head. Learn what a referee’s position is.
All these things should be learned while you’re young. Don’t be the guy that says wrestling and jiu-jitsu are gay.
You’re gonna learn that lesson the hard way sooner or later.
From my experience, most people are insecure about gassing out.
And if you’re not, then you probably never sparred hard with fresh guys. Or you’ve never been in a fight that’s gone the distance.
It’s fucking exhausting.
When you’re in that place, your mind is always showing you the way out. That door is always right there.
You gotta counter it.
You can get a lot of cardio and confidence from sparring hard.
Maybe you’re insecure about not being strong?
Get on a weightlifting program. There’s tons of free knowledge on YouTube.
Check all the boxes as best as you can. Focus on what you can control. Attack your insecurities head first.
And remember, everyone’s insecure.
