Red Hawk Essentials #68
Recipe For Disaster, Be Happy For Others, Top 3 Things To Know For Beginner White Belts
Recipe For Disaster
When you have a lot of fame and money at a young age, you gotta be careful not to get into bad habits. But it’s already a recipe for disaster.
On top of all the head trauma you’ve accumulated through your life, getting cracked and getting your bell rung – you get into a consistent routine of drinking alcohol and smoking weed, and you’re surrounded by toxic people who aren’t really your friends.
Doing this every day will make you go crazy.
Jake Shields talks about this when he went through it. He got a little bit manic from smoking weed all day.
That’s a recipe for some serious explosions and you’re gonna start acting weird. Look at how Ryan Garcia has been acting lately.
That’s why MMA is so much more of a sport than boxing. There’s so much to improve and get better at. Wrestling, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, etc.
Plus, you can improve your strength and flexibility.
Boxing is old school. You do a lot of roadwork, shadowbox, hit some mitts, and spar.
It gets boring. I think Ryan has become a master of all that and now he’s indulging in all these bad habits.
Losing yourself at that young age only happens to a few people when they make so much money early on. And if they’re not surrounded by good people, it can get dangerous.
Be Happy For Others
In a social media dominated world, it’s easy to get jealous and compare yourself to others.
This could even be negative programming installed into you by your parents growing up.
It’s only going to make you miserable.
So you gotta learn how to be happy for others. You can practice it. When you see something good happen to people, watch your thoughts.
If there’s a thought of “Oh that person doesn’t deserve it,” or “Yeah, but they got lucky…”
Switch that thought. Reroute it into something positive.
Good for them. That’s awesome.
Surround yourself with people who are genuinely happy for you. People who will help you improve even more.
People who aren’t happy for other people’s success, just scream insecurity.
They get jealous and the first thing they do is try to burn it down. Always in a negative mindset. Always thinking “Poor me” or “Stuff like that never happens to me”.
There’s a reason why they’re where they are in life. It’s because of those toxic traits.
But if you have good habits and good work ethic, you’ll already have some confidence. You might naturally be happy for others.
“Good for them. I’m on my way to something good happening.”
Work on yourself. Be happy for others. Your time is coming.

Top 3 Things To Know For Beginner White Belts
Maybe you finally decided to step on the mats and start your journey in jiu-jitsu.
Here are the top 3 things you should know.
1. Know you’re gonna get beat up
This past weekend, I did private lessons with professional baseball player Evan Longoria. The guy’s a stellar athlete, has a lot of accolades in baseball, and a lot of people look up to him.
He came in there open-minded, and he got beat up a little bit. But he was completely okay. He couldn’t wait to come back.
For some people, their ego can’t handle it. They need to be tough.
Being tough can only get you so far in jiu-jitsu. You gotta be technical and tactical.
2. Learn the positions and the objectives
Getting tapped out a lot is gonna make you want to tap other people out. But you gotta be patient when it comes to learning.
It’s more important for you to learn the positions and the objective of each position.
When you’re on top, the objective is to pass the guard. Keep progressing to knee on belly and progressing to full mount.
These are points in real competition. Full mount is 4 points. Taking the back with hooks is 4 points. Passing the guard is 3 points. Getting a takedown or sweep is 2 points.
Learn your guards from the bottom position. Half-guard, full-guard, open-guard, etc.
3. Take care of yourself outside of practice
If you’re not really active or haven’t done sports before, you’re in for a surprise.
You’re going to be more sore than you ever thought. Your back, your neck, and everything else.
So it’s important (especially if you’re a little bit older), that you take care of yourself outside of practice.
Stretch, get hydrated, eat clean foods that don’t cause inflammation, and move more than you usually would.
If you get injured, you’re gonna get sidelined and miss practice. Then you’re gonna get discouraged and end up quitting.
It happens all the time.
So be mindful of these things when you go to your first class. Work hard, have fun, and be smart about it.
Quick Hits From This Week
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 131
Finally hit over 100K on YouTube. That was my goal last year, but we didn’t hit it. This year, we got there.
What To Learn As An Up & Coming Fighter
This is so hard to answer because it depends on your base. Do you have a combat sports background or are you a good athlete?
Get good at the basics. People don’t understand how far you can get with a confident 1, 2, and 3. Jab, straight, and hook.
Tim’s Eyesight When He Was Fighting
PRK was the best thing I’ve ever done. I wish I had a fight where I had good eyes like I do now. I used to wear contacts and in the first scuffle, the contact would lodge into the back of my eyes or to the side.
Signs That You See They’ll Be A Successful Fighter
I see this all the time. This guy is talented, scrappy, and game to fight. But it’s more about how long is the guy gonna keep coming to practice?
Will Redhawk Take One More Fight?
Yes. I’m ready to rumble at all times. I’ve gotten offers, but not something that interests me. The only way I would take a fight is if it’s against someone I’d enjoy whooping their ass.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 277
The Power Of Saying No
I’ve been reading Essentialism and it talks about the power of saying no. This is something I’ve gotta get better at.
Is Ryan Garcia Drunk?
What is going on? He’s just spewing a lot of stuff. It looks really sad.
Getting Manic Smoking MJ
Jake Shields says it happened to 2 friends. Money, fame, and drugs at a young age is a recipe for disaster.

Tim
My name is David Mertens I am nineteen years old and to be honest with you I am stuck. Every morning I wake up to a life that I can’t stand. I go to a school that I can’t stand. I live with roommates that I can’t stand. Although I am great full for all of the blessings that god has given me in my life, I want more. I want to be a part of something bigger and something I am passionate about. I have been following Sean and Tim’s journey since the contender series and have been a fan since then. I love what you guys are doing with this whole new approach to MMA and the creativity your team displays. To put it simply I want in. I have trained jiu jitsu as a hobby since watching Sean’s first fight and although I’m getting better I know that it will not be a career for me. However I still want to be a part of that world. Currently I live in Buffalo NY the weather is cold and the days are short. I know your team is based out of Arizona and I want you to know that if either of you need a personal assistant I would fly west as soon as possible. Whether I’m picking up dry cleaning or cooking your steaks (I am a great cook) I would be passionate and as hard working as one could be. I am not asking for a hand out simply an opportunity. I promise you, you won’t regret it and if I am not the best personal assistant you have ever had in the first month then you don’t need to pay me a penny and I will return to Buffalo knowing that I truly tried my hardest. Thank you for reading my long ass message.
Sincerely,
David Mertens
