The One Fight I’d Come Back For
Woke up to a nice surprise on Instagram. Dillon Danis blasted me on his story. Came out of fucking nowhere too.
I’ve told you guys on previous issues of Red Hawk Essentials that I’m happy where I’m at right now. I’m working with a lot of good guys, my academy students are doing well. Life is good.
But if there’s one fight I would come back for, it’d be for Dillon. I would be excited to get ready and go back into camp.
But, there’s no chance in hell that kid would fight me 🤷♂️.
Jared Cannonier vs. Sean Strickland
This was a sick fight. Both those guys are tough motherfuckers.
Sean Strickland would be such an annoying guy to fight. He stands up tall and whips his jab at you and backs up so you can’t hit him.
I think the leg kicks are what won the fight for Jared. He was beating up Strickland’s legs real bad. And he went after him and landed bigger shots.
Again, there was some controversy in the judges’ scorecards. One judge had it 4-1 Sean, the other two scored it 4-1 Jared.
At the end of the day, you can’t be that mad at a split decision. You gotta expect those judges don’t know what they’re doing.
If it doesn’t go your way, you should’ve done more. If you know it’s close, take more risks. Do more in the 5th round.
Sick fucking fight though. I think Till vs. Strickland next would be sweet. And I’m excited to see what’s next for Jared.
4 Weeks of No UFC
We’ve entered a period of darkness where there’s no UFC fights until January 14th.
But there’s still going to be some pretty big fights in Japan that I’ll tune into. Especially the one on New Year’s Eve, we got the Bellator vs. Rizin card. Should be sick.
Other than that, I’ll be reviewing some older fights on UFC Fight Pass on the Red Hawk Academy Patreon. If you’re interested in checking that out, I’ve got a link for you at the end of this newsletter.
Thorne Supplements
Looking to pick up some supps for the holidays?
Check out Thorne, the brand that a lot of UFC fighters swear by.
A lot of people don’t get all the vitamins and nutrients they need from their diet alone. So taking good quality supplements is how you can stay optimized with your health.
But be careful out there. There’s a ton of supplements that just slap a label onto a bottle with big bullshit promises.
That’s why I use and trust Thorne.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
My daily supplement stack includes magnesium, fish oils, amino-acids, and their VeganPro complex protein.

What I’m Reading This Week:
Principles: Your Guided Journal (Create Your Own Principles To Get The Life And Work You Want) by Ray Dalio
Going through another Ray Dalio book this week, here’s some gold nuggets I want to point out so far.
To be effective you must not let your need to be right be more important than your need to find out what’s true and what’s best to do about it.
Don’t get your ego control you. Ryan Holiday has a book titled Ego is the Enemy and for good reason. Get out of your own way to get better.
If you are too proud of what you know or of how good you are at something, you will learn less, make inferior decisions, and fall short of your potential.
I’ve seen this with champion fighters. They don’t get pissed when someone beats them in practice. They get happy. Why?
Because they found an opportunity to get better and improve. That’s why they’re champs.
You can make better decisions than you are capable of making alone by tapping into the best thinking of others. Smart people ask other smart people questions, which is how they quickly get to be very smart.
There are people out there who have done what you want to do. There’s no need to experience and discover all the pitfalls and mistakes yourself. Just ask someone who’s done that thing before for advice. Look for the experts on YouTube, Google articles. The information you want is out there.
Quick Hits For This Week
You climb a mountain one step at a time. Getting to your goals take time and progress, so you can’t always be focused on the big goal.
What happens when you realize you’re not close to your goal? Can be fucking discouraging. So it’s good to know where you want to go, but don’t let the small wins go unnoticed!
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 67
Bad judging fucking ruins lives.
Fighters get half their pay. Their next fight won’t be as big. It’s a huge fucking problem. I think we need more judges and Eddie Cha thinks we need more competent judges and real repercussions for bad calls.
How would Henry beat Sug?
Eddie and I go back and forth on how Sug is a bad matchup for Henry. Eddie says leg kicks would probably be part of the game plan. Something everyone tries on Sug. But Henry is also an elite level wrestler, we’re talking Olympic gold medalist. So wrestling will always be there, but it’s about when to wrestle. I believe Sug is a really bad matchup for Henry. Longer, faster, and knockout power. But at the end of the day, Henry has never fought anyone like Sug and Sug hasn’t fought anyone like Henry. Let’s see if we see each other from across the cage next year.
Why it’s important to find people who can beat you.
This is what separates a champion’s mindset from anyone else. Usually people let their egos control them and get pissed when someone beats them at something. But from what I’ve seen, champs behave differently. They don’t get pissed. They’re happy. They’re happy they found a hole in their game and now they have the opportunity to fix it and get better.
How Eddie coaches fighters to their attributes.
I think this is a rare skill for coaches. Most coaches as Eddie said, it’s their way or the highway. Since Eddie has worked with so many different athletes, he does something he calls “custom design”. Basically, blending his coaching style with the athlete’s style.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 217
I recommend watching The Robert Follis Story on UFC Fight Pass
I wrote about Robert in Red Hawk Essentials #4. Robert was my coach, and I had a chance to live with him and train with him. This guy was the original MMA guru. He’s one of the smartest humans out there and coached so many champions. I can’t thank that guy enough for the impact he had on my life. He taught me how to eat good organic food, read books, and do my own research so I can think for myself. It was a huge loss to MMA when Robert passed, but I’ll always carry his wisdom with me.
Don’t talk about shit and not do it.
Be accountable. I love these podcasts because we can’t talk about shit and NOT do it. Because if you do, you’re a fucking fraud. Is there anything you’re giving yourself excuses on? Stop.
Power Slap.
The people in Power Slap must be smart. If you haven’t seen it, they’re doing an Ultimate Fighter type deal with the Power Slap contestants. From the commercial, it looks like there’s a bunch of fights that break out right out of the gate. I’ll be watching, it should be a good time. What do you guys think about the Power Slap product?

Christmas Plans
That ends this week’s Red Hawk Essentials. Hope you enjoyed the read, hope you’re continuing to work towards your goals.
Leave me a comment below of any thoughts. I read every single one.
Any big Christmas plans?
This Christmas will be the first Christmas we’re not spending with either my family or Mariah’s family.
It’ll just be and Mariah, but it’ll be a chill one. Looking forward to the downtime at home, enjoying my dogs, and still running practices at the gym.
Enjoy your Holidays with family and the people around you. If you’ve got a big feast planned, remember Dan Garner’s advice.
Snack throughout the day or feast at night. Pick one. You run into trouble when you do both.
Weight lift before your feast if you can.
But importantly, enjoy it. Don’t overdo it, but don’t cut back either.
Talk next week.
Tim
“A fool never learns, a smart man learns from his mistakes, a wise man learns from the mistakes of others”. Tough to hear you talk about your coach on the pod, the impact you have created on others is a testament to his legacy. Happy holidays to you and the fam 👊
Thanks for reiterating the champions mindset multiple times throughout. This a very valuable pill to swallow especially when you don't have direct influences like this in your personal life!!
