Empathy At The Highest Levels
Having empathy is a great skill to have as a person, but when it comes to fighting, it’s not smart.
You need to keep that killer instinct, especially at the highest levels.
Guys are so tough and if you give them any room to breathe or recover, they’ll make you pay for it. If they’re awake and conscious, there’s still an opportunity for them to win.
Unless you’re absolutely sure you KO’d the guy clean with his eyes rolling to the back of his head, you need to keep going until the ref pulls you off.
Leave the empathy outside of the cage. Saving the other guy from damage is the ref’s job.
You might’ve seen what happened with Jalin Turner. Jalin cracked Moicano with a beautiful straight left that sat him down in the first round.
But Jalin didn’t follow up and started dropping bombs on him like he did with Bobby Green. He made the mistake of turning around and thinking the fight was over.
It wasn’t.
The ref didn’t stop it and Moicano popped right back up even though he was on wobbly legs.
We had Jalin on the pod before and I know he’s such a nice and genuine kid.
But that cost him half his money and ended his win streak.
You gotta go for the kill and not feel bad. It’s what you both signed up for.
Religion In Sports
We see guys thank God and give credit to God after winning fights all the time.
But I have a few questions about that.
Is faith in God gonna help you win? I don’t think so.
And is God up there supporting beating another man up in a cage? Does God support those cage fighters thinking that’s good?
You go in there and whoop another man’s ass, take half his money, and make his family sad – is God supporting that?
It’s an interesting subject.
I do think that religion and faith takes the pressure off the athletes. All the preparation has been done and the rest is in God’s hands.
Thorne
UFC 300 got you fired up?
A bunch of UFC fighters use Thorne as part of their daily health routine.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.
Use the link below and Throne will hook you up with an additional 15% discount on your order.
Future Of Jiu-jitsu
I’ll say this now, making a full-time living off only competing in grappling isn’t gonna be possible anytime soon.
I know more promotions and tournaments are popping up. But I don’t think it’s enough.
It costs money to put on events. The promotion has to make money. It costs money to fly the athletes out, it costs money to put them up in hotels, it costs money to feed them, and all the workers.
And is there gonna be enough viewers and people buying tickets to make it worth it? At least pay the promotion and the athletes enough to live?
No. It’s not gonna happen anytime soon.
But if you win a bunch of tournaments, you’ll start making a name for yourself.
People are gonna wanna pay you for seminars and private lessons. And if you get big enough, you can do instructionals and make consistent money there.
The real money to make money in jiu-jitsu is to open your own school. Get people to pay you monthly to learn and train with you.
But living off of just competing? Not anytime soon.
Maybe in the far future when jiu-jitsu gets more popular. Maybe they talk about it more on Joe Rogan and other podcasts. Or maybe more big events come out with the right ruleset.
Then maybe it’s possible. But we’ll see.
Quick Hits From This Week
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 135
On this episode of the pod, Joe Riggs sits down with me and he’s not drunk.
Joe Riggs vs. Diego Sanchez
So Joe ended up getting knocked out by Diego. But during the post-fight shower, Joe was still concussed and thought he was getting ready for the fight. Hilarious story.
Joe Riggs vs Nick Diaz 2 at the Hospital
Joe and Nick had a war, but Nick wasn’t too happy with the decision so they did round 2 at the hospital. Nick cracked Joe while he was getting IV fluids and knocked a tooth out and Joe went back at Nick, but accidentally pooped himself.
THE BEST Nighttime Routine
I used to not want to go to bed early. I would scroll my phone and it would not be good for my brain. Now, my room is set up for sleep. Mariah and I go to bed at the same time and our bodies know it’s time to shut down.
