The Focus For The Time Being
We’re back. Things have been hectic. We have some new things to focus on for the time being.
For Suga, first things first, he’s gotta go get his hip fixed. He’s got to have an insane recovery for his labrum. Similar to what I did for my Achilles when I tore it. Right now, my Achilles feels like it’s damn near 100%.Â
For me, we’re also close to closing on a new property, 2 acres that are connected to Sean’s 5 acres. Going to have a lot more room for new animals, so I’m excited to expand the farm that I have.Â
I also want to work on my home gym. I want a space where we can do hot/cold, lift, hang out, grill steaks and burgers – a place to hang out and improve.Â
There’s always something to work on. But my main focuses are:
Working on improving my health and my own grappling.Â
I have a lot of students who depend on me to teach them jiu-jitsu. So I have to help them improve in both BJJ and MMA.
I have my podcast to improve. I’m always looking for ways to make that better.
Improving my coffee shop. I love my coffee shop and it’s really growing on people. I knew that if I stayed consistent, got quality ingredients, and served drinks that I liked, eventually it would catch on. The vibes from the coffee shop are phenomenal. I might want to open another coffee shop open day.
Getting smarter. There are so many smart people that I look up to like Tim Ferriss, Naval Ravikant, and Joe Rogan. Those people are constantly learning so I’m always looking to learn. Reading different books and listening to different podcasts.Â
Most importantly, you gotta enjoy the ride. It’s something I always remind myself of.Â
If you always think about what could be, you’ll drive yourself crazy.
Enjoy all of this. Be grateful. There’s so much to be grateful for.Â
Hold Yourself To It
Whatever your goals are, you have to hold yourself accountable. Set your routine and habits that will get you there.
Anything that’s worth of shit, you have to do that.
But if you’re feeling burnt out, beat down, your brain’s not in it, and you don’t want to go to practice – find something else that’s healthy for you.Â
Maybe a breathing protocol. Go through a warm-up and good stretch. Hit the cold plunge. Get some movement in the sun. Or just go to the gym and get mental reps.Â
Don’t sleep on mental reps. You can get so much out of watching. Especially if you’re genuinely interested in different positions, transitions, and sequences. You’re not actively doing the activity, but your mind is engaged and that will help you grow.Â
Maybe you do need the rest. You worked out hard. You need the rest. It’s good to know your limits and everyone will have a different training load.
Or you can be lazy. Maybe you smoke some weed, play some video games, and eat a bunch of shit food. Up to you.
Your Purpose
I think all upcoming fighters’ goal should be to grow their skill enough to compete with the best in the world. Drill your technique enough and become an expert.Â
A lot of my guys like Tommy and Ezra, I let them know that the rush isn’t to get into the UFC. What’s the point of getting into the UFC, getting a couple good paydays, and then struggling?
When you get into the UFC, your goal should be to make a run at the title. Your skills are good enough from top to bottom to make it happen.
Maybe your goal is to get into the UFC. That’s a lot of fighters’ dreams. But once you get there, you gotta set new goals. Don’t be complacent.Â
Don’t forget your purpose. What’s your why? Why are you fighting?
For me right now, my purpose is to help others and enjoy the ride.Â
