Finding Mentors
I think when you’re starting your journey on anything, it’s important to find mentors, coaches, experts or someone you can look up to.
And here’s something cool to think about…
I’ve never met some of my mentors.
Some of my mentors are online. People like Tim Ferris, Paul Chek, and James Clear.
Even though I’ve never met these guys, I still feel like they are my coaches and mentors. Their content has inspired or influenced me in a positive way.
But here’s what I would do if you wanted to find a mentor or coach in person.
And I know it can be uncomfortable if you feel like you have nothing to offer in return. That doesn’t mean people don’t want to help you.
The first step is easy.
Just show up.
Show up at the jiu-jitsu academy. Show up at the gym. Show them how consistent you are.
Show them your willingness to learn and willingness to receive guidance.
Be humble and listen to what they have to say.
And do this for a long time.
I think this is your best shot if you have nothing to offer right now.
If you show someone that you’re willing to commit, they’ll want to help you.
Timbo’s UFC 285 Picks
First of all, I’m always skeptical of anyone who says they’re good at picking fights. It’s a coin flip and it depends on who decides to show up that night.
But Jon Jones is back, ladies and gentlemen.
So let me tell you, ring rust is definitely real.
But when it comes to someone as talented as Jon Jones, it might not hinder him at all. I think his coaches are smart enough to know that with a long layoff, you need to do some hard sparring sessions with talented opponents.
If you do this, the ring rust might not be as bad. But most people after a long layoff like to start slow. They want to fight someone who’s not as good just to get their timing back and go through the motions.
But Jon Jones is a freak of nature. He wants the best heavyweight in the UFC right out the gate. It shows you how confident he is.
I’m also curious to see how he carries around this extra 50 pounds of muscle and what their game plan is.
Chael Sonnen pointed out that Jon is doing a lot of swimming sessions. Swimming sessions means you’re trying to do workouts that are easy on your joints.
It makes sense because heavy lifts like squats, deadlifts, and bench press with heavier body weight can take a toll on your joints. And you gotta eat more to maintain it all.
But I think Jon Jones is the best fighter in the world. He has a lot more tools than Ciryl Gane, so he should get the job done. If Ciryl makes a mistake and Jon gets on top of him, it might be over.
But again, what a fucking animal for taking this fight after such a long layoff.
So for this weekend, I’m going with Jon, Shavkat, Valentina, and Trevin Jones. I think Trevin can pull off the upset against Cody.
Thorne Supplements
Aljo’s been saying he hasn’t been sleeping well lately. Maybe he should consider getting some magnesium from Thorne.
I personally use Thorne as part of my daily supplementation.

I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino-acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.

A Secret Most Fighters Won’t Tell You 🤫
Half an hour before my first professional fight, I ate a Subway sandwich in the locker room.
I didn’t know how it would affect me and I figured it’d be better to not fight hungry. Boy was I wrong.
A few minutes into the fight and I was already gagging, trying not to puke. Still ended up finishing that guy though.
But I still see this behavior at the highest levels in the UFC.
Most people watching don’t know that a lot of these fighters aren’t rehydrating the right way.
It’s funny to me because they’re fully disciplined until it matters. Hard training camp, eating perfect on a strict diet, and cutting 30 pounds leading up to their fight.
But as soon as they step off the scales at weigh-ins, I’ve seen guys run straight to the casino buffet. Chowing down on some pancakes and syrup, and other stuff that’s hard to digest.
When you’re restricting and depleting yourself so much, you want to indulge. I get it. But for most guys, it’s detrimental.
So a lot of times, guys are in the middle of the fight trying to hold back puking or shitting themselves.
And when you’re trying not to shit yourself instead of trying to win the fight, probably not gonna end well for you.
What' I’m Reading This Week: Ignore Everybody And 39 Other Keys To Creativity
This is a short read and I think everyone should read this book at least once.
If you want to be a creative person or if you’re doing anything creative, I really encourage you to check it out. You can definitely learn a few things.
The Creative Act: A Way of Being
Someone gifted me this book, it showed up at my gym’s doorstep.
If you don’t know who Rick Rubin is, he’s the legendary music producer who’s worked with some of the biggest artists in history.
I was browsing the table of contents and there’s a bunch of chapters on creativity, awareness, and the subconscious mind. Right down my alley.
I’m looking forward to reading it. If you’ve read this book, let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Quick Hits From This Week
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 78
Getting rid of hiccups
Here’s a foolproof way to get rid of your hiccups without getting scared or drinking a cup of water with a match inside it. According to Andrew Huberman, it’s 3 inhales in a row. So take 3 breaths in without exhaling and on the 3rd inhale, hold your breath for 15-20 seconds before slowly exhaling. Hiccups can get annoying and I’m doing this next time they come around. Thank you Dr. Huberman for the knowledge.
Staying in shape while in business
A Patreon member asked how he should stay in shape while running in his own business. I suggest that he take a pay cut to hire someone and train them. This way he can focus on his health, do jiu-jitsu, and have time for other things.
BJJ in 5 years and could I be a contender?
I get bummed out when I get injured constantly because I want to fucking compete! Maybe it’s genes. But I have the coaches and teammates to make a run at a championship. And I think BJJ is going to double in popularity in 5 years. I hope they start putting it in colleges and high schools.
Did I ever get bullied?
I did. I went to a Native American elementary school growing up and I got called Ketchup by the kids. And I didn’t know how to scrap back then so I got beat up a hand full of times. I was tough though, but usually got my ass whooped back then.
Resetting after arguing with your partner
Sometimes it’s about stepping up. Either being the first to apologize or just realize that what you’re arguing about is stupid, so admitting that you’re wrong to get passed it. A good piping in the bedroom goes a long way too.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 227
Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury
Great fight between those guys. Tommy looked prepared, looked like he trained hard. There’s still big fights for Jake out there, don’t think he lost any steam. Can’t believe people still want to see Jake get fucked up. People who want to see confident people lose have issues.
UFC 285
Sick card. Cody “No Love” is back. If he can put together 3 wins, might be a future fight with Sug. The crew is going with Trevin Jones. Bo Nickal is making his debut and he’s an absolute monster. Jalin is going to have a tough time with Gamrot. I’m also taking Shavkat now, in the episode I said Geoff. Valentina is gonna be hard to beat, but Alexa Grasso is top 3 prettiest in the UFC for me. And finally, we’re rolling with Jon.
Don’t get offended with accepting the facts
Not getting offended with facts is a sign of intelligence. I’m always curious, should you get offended by something’s that true? Maybe it’s a lack of understanding.
Aljo still hasn’t signed
At this point, I’d be surprised if this fight happens. It’s looking more hopeful that we get that fight, so we’re gonna stay ready.

Talk next week.
Tim
I never had much in the way of in person mentors. I did have good people to look-to, but the lessons learned from those examples took more effort on my part to figure out and took longer to sink in.
I try to make up for it by actively mentoring a few young people nowadays. You're totally right about then having to show up first. I can't make them make decisions, and I don't really want to force them anyway, just guide. But if they don't show up in the first place there's nothing to guide.
Books (and their authors) make for great mentors though. James Clear is a genius. One day I'd like to buy him dinner.
Thanks for your contribution to the community.
Good stuff Tim. My coworker last week mentioned that they should start doing some exercises at home but were struggling for motivation. I passed on the advice that every day they choose not to, think ‘i’m a bitch’.. Checked in with them yesterday and they haven’t missed a day yet 🤝
