I never had much in the way of in person mentors. I did have good people to look-to, but the lessons learned from those examples took more effort on my part to figure out and took longer to sink in.
I try to make up for it by actively mentoring a few young people nowadays. You're totally right about then having to show up first. I can't make them make decisions, and I don't really want to force them anyway, just guide. But if they don't show up in the first place there's nothing to guide.
Books (and their authors) make for great mentors though. James Clear is a genius. One day I'd like to buy him dinner.
Good stuff Tim. My coworker last week mentioned that they should start doing some exercises at home but were struggling for motivation. I passed on the advice that every day they choose not to, think ‘i’m a bitch’.. Checked in with them yesterday and they haven’t missed a day yet 🤝
