I Got My First Champ!
Over this past week, one of my students won her first IBJJF tournament down in Anaheim. This also checks off the first champion student under my tutelage.
I know I keep saying this and I’m gonna keep fucking saying it.
Discipline and commitment is the key to winning.
Not only did Tehya stay committed to the program, she also dialed in with her nutrition working with Dan Garner (same guy who Suga works with).
And she committed to strengthening her mind. Reading books like Discipline Is Destiny by Ryan Holiday, and staying disciplined with her meditation.
Top to bottom, she lived the life of a professional athlete for the past 6 months.
Tehya’s record this year was 18-3 with 15 subs. And she got a win back against a girl who beat her 6-0 at Pan Am’s.
She made the adjustments. She controlled her emotions. She controlled her breathing.
Now she’s a world champion. Well deserved.
But it all came from her consistent habits. Showing up every day and working hard.
How I Became A Coach
Ever since I was 19, I loved helping my friends get ready for battle.
Not sure where it came from. But I always found myself helping other fighters with mitts, helping corner them, and getting their minds right for a fight.
The first UFC fighter I ever cornered was Jamie Varner. Jamie was the former 155 champ in WEC, and I got a chance to corner him at his fight with Melvin Guillard. After that, I cornered Jamie in a few more fights and got more experience under my belt.
But to let you guys know…
I’m still not officially “retired” from fighting.
I didn’t have a moment where I decided to give up fighting for coaching.
I really don’t have an interest in becoming a head coach for a lot of guys. At a lot of large gyms, one head coach can be responsible for 20-30 guys and girls.
So it’s hard for a fighter to get the personalized attention they need to really break through.
And sometimes the coaches get treated like shit.
Sometimes when a fighter loses, they’ll just blame the coach and dip. Then all that time and energy you’ve spent amounted to nothing.
But when I started working with Suga, I realized I had an opportunity to turn him into someone really special.
After living with Sug, I learned what makes him tick. I know how his brain works. What annoys him. What upsets him.
This has definitely helped me in the way I’ve been able to coach and teach him. Sometimes I’m able to coach him without him knowing he’s being coached.
With his talent and my focus, I know he can turn into someone who can have a big impact on the sport.
And so far, I’d say we’re on our way to doing that.

Bad Judging
At the end of Paddy vs. Jared, I had no idea who the decision was gonna go to. I was leaning toward Jared because he landed cleaner shots.
But this decision caused an outrage on Twitter and in the MMA community.
And I know how Jared feels.
I’ve been on the end of bad decisions before in my MMA career.
One fight that stands out to me is when I fought at the Playboy Mansion for PBFN 5 (Playboy Fight Night 5).
By the end of that fight, I was so sure I won the fight. So sure that when they called the winner, I thought they called the wrong guy and fucked up the corners.
But that just goes to show you that you have no idea what the judges are thinking.
You don’t even know what their background is in. Sometimes that could bias their decision.
If their background is in wresting and grappling, they might favor takedowns and ground control more.
If their background is in karate or boxing, they might be looking for cleaner strikes and damage.
Right now, there’s not really a criteria laid out for many different positions and takedowns.
And I think that’s gonna have to change in the next 5-10 years for the sport to keep growing and evolving.
But here’s my fix on bad judging.
Add more judges.
Make it 5 or 7. Then look at all the cards across the board like a jury.
I think that will create a lot more fair decisions.
What I’m Reading This Week:
Principles By Ray Dalio
In this book, Dalio talks about creating values and principles for yourself as a leader.
When you need to make a tough decision or any decision, you can turn to these principles to make the best decision. It makes it easier on yourself, and makes it more clear.
By consistently making good decisions, it’ll keep the direction of your business moving toward a positive direction.
Really enjoying it. A lot of business leaders love this book, so check it out if you’re interested in business.
Quick Hits From This Week
Stop Being A Pussy
My main focus this week is to stop being a puss about the cold plunge.
It’s starting to get cold out. It’s like 40 or 50 degrees when I wake up and my house is sitting around 65 degrees.
But I want to start my mornings off with a really tough thing.
So I’m gonna start waking up and getting into that cold plunge first thing. Then I can rinse off in a hot shower and get on with my day.
Do you do anything hard first thing in the morning? Let me know down in the comments.
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 66
Gut bacteria linked to depression.
Recent studies have shown that gut bacteria is linked to depression. Want to know the easy fix to this? Google how to eat healthy. If you’re feeling down and feeling like shit, maybe it’s the Cheetos and sodas you’re downing every day.
Do I miss being in the cage?
A lot of people ask me about what could’ve been. What if I didn’t break my jaw, won my fight, and got into the UFC? And I know a lot of people want to see me rumble again. And if the right opportunity comes up, I’m down to take 3 months to get in shape and beat somebody up.
But at this point, I’ve just accepted where I am. When I made the conscious decision to switch paths, I was a broke down broke boy. I had surgery after surgery and even owed some promotions money for my medical bills. Obviously, I wanted to keep fighting, but I also didn’t want to be broke my entire life. So instead of thinking with my ego, I started to look at life with my intellectual brain. And that has brought me to where I am now in life.
Dating after a divorce.
A Patreon member wanted some advice for relationships after a bad divorce. And man, that’s hard. It’s gonna fucking suck. My advice is to dial yourself in. Focus on yourself. Surround yourself with good people. Don’t let the experience define you.
The most important part of your day.
Here’s what I do to set myself up to have a good day.
Having a good morning routine.
Set myself up for a good night’s sleep. Not drinking caffeine too late or eating a fuck ton of food before bed.
Staying hydrated.
Advice for first dates.
Be yourself (easier said than done) and try to be funny.

UFC 282 Recap
Topuria is going to be a fucking animal.
Everyone in Sug’s watch party thought Paddy lost. I would love to watch that fight again with the judges just so I can see what they’re seeing.
Cannonier vs. Strickland
I don’t see a way Strickland beats Jared. Jared is coming off a close decision with Izzy and had a win streak before. And Strickland is coming off a KO loss. I think Jared gets it done this Saturday.
Sleeping good.
My shoulder is feeling a little better so I’m getting good sleep again. And god damn, that’s the hack to true happiness. You’ll know when you wake up from a night of good sleep.
Paddy vs. Ariel Beef
I think the whole thing made Paddy look kinda dumb. But Paddy is still going to be a superstar, he’s got the haircut, he’s got the charisma. So everyone is still going to watch until he gets on a losing streak.

Tim
Best advice from Timbo was to stay off that fone first thing. Put on flight mode and not waking up to notifications of other people wanting your time. Start the day off right 🙏 I think repetition is also key to success/growth. Your first 1000 jabs, takedowns, golf swings probably suck. Keep going until you less suck
keep up the content up please, the stuff you talk about is so important i feel like for people like me who want to learn and improve themselves as a healthy athlete and mma fan. Everything you talk about is gold, keep up the good shit red hawk 💪🤟🏻🤙🏻
