2023 Goals, Should You Go All In? and My Thoughts on Team Fighting in MMA
My Goals For 2023
2023 is upon us. And this year is gonna be my year.
So let me share some of my goals with you:
Training Goals
You guys probably know I haven’t been able compete or train hard because of my shoulder. But I got a little stem cell update for ya.
I think they’re finally kickin’ in.
Not gonna lie, I was getting a little frustrated a month ago. I thought I would be feeling a lot better, but I wasn’t. Shit was taking a lot more time than I thought.
But I just had my first training session in a long time where I was able to train at full speed. And I’m excited.
I’ve also been doing muscle scraping. It’s a method where you use a tool to scrape over a muscle back and forth. It’s good for loosening up the soft tissue and muscle tissue.
I think it’s been helping loosen up some of my scar tissue on both my biceps. I tore and repaired both my biceps a couple years ago. And I think when they repaired it, they fucked up and put the bicep tendon too far through the bone.
The muscle scraping has helped loosen it up and puts less pressure on my shoulder.
So this year when I’m all healed up, I got my eyes set on the ADCC trials in October.
It’s gonna be a huge. Another bracket full of 250-300 guys, but I know I have what it takes to win.
On top of that, I’d love to take home the dub in the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds.
But before all that, I’d love to do some IBJJF Opens to get my points up before the championship.
Business Goals
Here’s some of the numbers I’m working toward:
100K subscribers on YouTube
100K followers on Instagram
600 Patreon members
200 members in my gym
My long term vision I laid out in Red Hawk Essentials #5 is to combine both my gyms and create the ultimate training center.
Burn The Boats or Have a Plan B?
This is for those of you who want to get into business, fighting, or want to build a side hustle.
Should you burn the boats and go all in? Or should you be safe and have a Plan B?
For me, if you’re super passionate about something and you’re having fun while working towards that goal - that’s my sign to go all in.
Regardless if it fails, you’re still having a good time and enjoying getting better.
That’s how I felt when I dropped out of college to pursue fighting full-time. I knew I was gonna be broke for awhile, but I focused on getting better in every area. And it was fucking fun.
With that being said, I do think you should have a rational outlook.
In the worst case scenario where you have to stop pursuing your goals, always have a Plan B in mind. You never know what’s gonna happen.
But again, if you’re passionate, fucking go for it. Go all in and take action like you’re guaranteed to succeed.
Thorne Supplements
Speaking of goals, are you prioritizing your health this year? Then Thorne might be for you.
Thorne is the supplement brand trusted by many UFC fighters.
It’s third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino-acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
Don’t fall for those supplements with fancy labels and bullshit promises.
If you’re in the market for some good supplements, Thorne is the brand I trust. You can feel safe and good about what you’re putting into your body with Thorne.

Team Fighting In MMA
On New Year’s Eve In Japan, they held a Team Bellator vs. Team Rizin card. Sold out crowd in Saitama Super Arena.
I didn’t catch the card, but I saw that the Bellator guys swept Rizin.
Back in around 2006, they used to have a MMA team fighting league called IFL (International Fight League).
My old roommate Pat Healy used to fight in the IFL. It was coached by veteran MMA fighters, and they paid a bunch of guys to live together, train together, and duel other teams.
The pay was around $2,000 a month. But the organization just couldn’t hold up. I don’t know their finances, but I thought the concept was solid.
At the end of the day, you get in a cage and it’s just you versus that other guy. You’re getting paid what you’re getting paid. Team aspect or not.
What I’m Watching This Week
Love learning about new things and learning how things work.
So I’ve been watching Gold Rush on the Discovery Channel. It’s super interesting.
We see the end product of gold. Fancy jewelry, gold bars, and luxurious shit. But seeing the process on how gold is mined is crazy.
These guys take super big risks, make large investments, in hopes of finding gold. It’s dangerous. And it’s not even guaranteed.
So if you have gold, it just gives you a new perspective for appreciating how it got there.
Quick Hits From This Week
A goodie from the man James Clear:
“10-year dreams. 5-minute actions.”
Where do I want to be in 10 years?
What can I do in the next 5 minutes to contribute to that outcome?”
It’s one thing to sit around, visualize, and set your goals. But there’s only one way to achieve those goals.
Action.
You don’t need a new year to work toward your goals. Every day is a new day to make progress and get better.
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 70
Reflection on 2022. So much to be grateful for.
This year’s been fucking good. I think it’s the accumulation of all the work we’ve been putting in for the past 5-10 years.
A year ago, I had 60 gym members. Today, we have 150. If we keep growing like this, who knows. We also gained over 25,000 YouTube subs in a year.
Trained Sug to be the #1 guy in a stacked AF division.
A gem from James Clear’s 3-2-1 Newsletter: You just need to have the courage to eliminate everything that doesn’t directly feed what you want.
It’s hard. Hard as fuck if you’re already in a comfortable spot. But you just have to ask yourself if you’re okay with something turning into a regret later on in life.
“It is nearly impossible to have your best idea the first time you think about something.
The most likely way to uncover important insights is to frequently revisit a problem. The longer you're in the game, the more ideas bubble up to the surface.
Time unlocks insights.”
This is something I need to work on myself. Whenever I get an idea, I just want to get going. But I’m learning that things take time. Sean’s been teaching me that. There’s a lot of deals in pipeline but they take months and I just want to get it done. So I gotta learn to be a little bit more patient.

New Year’s Resolution
Break your goals down. Focus on weekly goals, maybe even daily. Write down your goals too so you can see them. Suga swears by journaling and if you haven’t tried it, give it a shot.
Start jiu-jitsu
It’ll change your life. I know it can be scary to walk in there with no experience. But after a few sessions, you’ll be one of the guys and feel part of the group.
Is using people for clout normal today?
People experience the private jet life, get taken care of at a club, and think it’s their new normal. Now they need to feel like that every time. But at the end of the day, none of that shit matters.
More motivated for 2023.
Feel like all the years we’ve been grinding have finally started paying off recently. So I’m especially excited to see what 2023 brings. That’s what happens when you just be consistent.

Started the program 75 hard on January 1st to help maximize my discipline. Each day I have to do 2 workouts where 1 must be outside, drink 1 gallon of water, read 10 pages of nonfiction, stick to a diet, and take a progress picture. Starting to see the mental and physical changes already, yall should check it out!
“A goal without a plan is just a dream”. Your ability to wear so many hats (coach, business owner, content creator) while being a good fn person is inspiring, thank you.
