Red Hawk Essentials #8
The best gift I received, doing hard things, and my simple, effective goal setting strategies
The Best Gift From This Year
I never really celebrated Christmas until I was 20.
To me, holidays were just another day.
But ever since I met Mariah and met her family, we started having get togethers with family every year. So it was cool to get the real holiday experience.
This year, it was the first time in a long time Mariah and I spent our Christmas alone together.
But it was nice to have the extra time to really enjoy my dogs and enjoy Mariah. Really feel appreciation and gratitude for the life around me.
We didn’t do any gifts this year. But I don’t care. I feel like we have all the things we already want.
Plus, I’ve already got a whole list of things I’m already grateful for.
My health
I’ve still got 2 working arms/legs
I can still see from both my eyes
I can still hear from both my ears
My family and loved ones are healthy
That’s more than a lot of people can say. So around the holidays, I really try to take the time to recognize, appreciate, and be grateful for these things.
We did get a brand new Samsung refrigerator for the house though. My buddy Gus from LA hooked us up.
Also, thinking about opening up a liquidation supercenter with Gus in Peoria. That would be pretty awesome.
We’ll see.
Do Hard Things Every Day
I wrote in Red Hawk Essentials #6 that I’m gonna stop being a puss and commit to doing the cold plunge every morning. So far, I’ve been pretty consistent even though it fucking sucks every time.
I think when you do hard things and get them out of the way, you can really be present and enjoy the moment.
That’s why I love hard training sessions. I can push myself to the limit then go home and enjoy everything. And also feel like I’ve earned it.
That’s why I keep my gym open during holidays.
People usually have more time on their hands during these times. Normally, they’re coming in after a full day’s work.
So I want to give my members and students an opportunity to get a workout in or put themselves through some tough situations.
This way, they can go back home and really enjoy their loved ones and family.
They’ve earned it.
Thorne Supplements
Are you prioritizing your health for your “New year, new me” goals?
Let Thorne help you out with that one.
Most UFC fighters are afraid of taking outside supplements because they might be tainted and that’ll get you popped by USADA even though you didn’t know about it.
That’s why fighters trust Thorne.
Thorne is third-party tested for the best quality ingredients so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body.
I personally use magnesium before sleep, fish oils, amino-acids when I’m training hard, and their VeganPro complex protein.
Don’t fall for those supplements with fancy labels and bullshit promises.
Use the link below and Throne will hook you up with a 15% discount on your order.

Goal Setting Strategies For 2023
We’re coming up on the time of year where people set big goals for themselves and stay consistent for maybe… a month, week, or not even a day.
Gyms will be packed for a month then you’ll see a steady drop off. And the excuse is usually, “there’s always next year”.
If you’re looking for the easy answer, the magic pill solution, I don’t got it.
But I will share two strategies I use that might be helpful.
First and foremost, the key to achieving your goals is having fucking discipline.
If you don’t have or develop discipline, my strategies or any strategy won’t work.
#1. Set realistic goals for yourself.
Set these weekly. It’s fine to know where you want to be in 1 or 2 years.
But you need to constantly work towards that.
So every Sunday, take some time and write down what you need to accomplish this week to push you towards your bigger goals.
#2. Make your word law.
It’s simple.
If you say you’re gonna do something, fucking do it.
Say this to yourself.
“In 2023, whatever I say I’m gonna do, I’m gonna do it. I’m going to have the discipline and mental strength to do it consistently.”
If you say you’re going to lose 50 pounds, learn a new skill, start training X times a week…
Fucking do it. Don’t break your word to yourself.
Think About It
We all have to sell our time in our lives. Whether that’s getting a job, going to school, whatever.
But you can choose what you do with your remaining time in the day if you’re working a job you don’t like.
You can choose how you sell your time or work your way to being in that position.
What do you guys think about this quote from Naval?
Quick Hits From This Week
Red Hawk Recap Ep. 69
I’d come back to fight Dillon Danis.
Talked about this in last week’s Red Hawk Essentials. But Dillon blasted me on Instagram for commenting “lol” underneath a video of him looking like a slow turd hitting mitts.
Dude can’t beat me with a gi, without a gi. I’d piece him up in boxing, and he sure as fuck can’t beat me in MMA.
If he sends over a contract tomorrow, I’ll be in fight camp tomorrow. But don’t get your hopes up, he’ll never fight me.
Training BJJ as a female athlete
BJJ champ Elisabeth Clay joined us on the pod and shared some of her insights in training BJJ as a female athlete. At the highest levels, the training is no different for a girl than a guy. The good professors won’t deviate.
She’s seen her fair share of sexist comments in dude dominated gyms. But that doesn’t bother her. She’s got her eyes on winning championships in 2 weight classes in a gi and winning ADCC.
Building your brand on IG
Elisabeth focuses on building her brand on IG. She says engagement is the hardest but most important metric for your brand.
She’s also got some horned up freaks in the DMs, getting multiple marriage proposals. Brazilian dudes can be wild, but she gets more 🍆 pics from the Americans.
Porn fucks up the brain
Elisabeth has never watched a single second of porn. She says it’s fucking weird. She would leave her boyfriend immediately if she caught him watching it. Can’t blame her, there are multiple scientific studies on the negative effects of excessive porn on the brain.
Sometimes we can’t help it because we’re guys. I think the worst part is that these young kids have access to smart devices and can access that shit within seconds. I can see how that could mess up a developing brain.
TimboSugarShow Ep. 218
RIP to Stephan Bonnar
An OG and legend in the sport. His fight with Forrest made the UFC. Super sad. Feel bad for his family.
Is Aljo running to 145?
He said on Twitter if he beats Henry, he’ll go up. Probably because the guy cuts a ton of weight. Almost 40 pounds. That’s insane.
Meanwhile, there’s some big fights going on at 35. Chito vs. Sandhagen. Sug hopes Chito gets the dub because the rematch would be huge.
How Sug manifested his life
If you would’ve told Sug he’d be a millionaire, own a lambo, own fancy watches, and have a nice house 7 years ago, he’d believe you. Even when we were nickel and diming it to eat - he would still believe you. Manifesting is a silly word sometimes, but it’s powerful in the right context. You won’t get shit without work and action. So Sug used all these visions of big goals to motivate him to train twice a day even when we were broke. The key here is that manifesting requires action.
Building a strong mental fortitude
It takes discipline and willpower to get up and train or do anything hard when your body is battered and your mind is tired. So how do you develop this fortitude to keep going? I think the easiest way is to be around a group of people where being a pussy is NOT normal.
Different people have different motivations. Sug saw fighting as a way to become famous and rich. That’s how he made himself go train even when he didn’t want to. I just loved fighting so much that I didn’t care about money at times. I just wanted to be where the best guys were and get better.
